Extra Winch and Crane Lift Burden

ImageSituated just under 50 miles outside of Des Moines, Iowa the city of Pella is home to around 10,000 residents. Making up the customer base for the city’s public works Wastewater Treatment Plant, these residents produce an average of 1.5 million gallons of wastewater per day.

To process this sizeable volume of wastewater the Treatment Plant operates two sludge storage tanks. Each tank accommodates a submersible mixer that plant employees must raise and lower as necessary. To do this, the Treatment Plant invested in a Thern worm gear hand winch, model 4WM2-K, and a portable davit crane, model 5124.

The winch, which can support up to 2,000 lbs, features machine cut worm gears that provide accurate operation, plus an enclosed oil bath that allows for continuous lubrication of gears. Both elements ensure the durability and long-lasting service of the product. In addition, a hex drive and handle are included with the winch and this particular model can be power driven with up to a 400 rpm drill motor. It also features an internal mechanical brake.

The portable davit crane includes an adjustable boom that telescopes to four different lengths and changes height while under load with a ratchet style screw jack. The crane also rotates 360 degrees and breaks down for storage or transport.

“Previous project specifications required the use of a Thern winch, and we were so pleased with it, we decided to order another one,” said Wastewater Treatment Plant Superintendent, Denny Waits, “while we once had one winch to do the work of two, having the second one is best for the health of the operators as they’re not having to move a winch from tank to tank.”

Not only has the additional winch reduced safety hazards, it’s more convenient for the plant employees. The operators are no longer burdened by moving the winch from one tank to the next and “having two of the same winches makes it much easier to keep an inventory of parts,” said Waits.

All of the Minnesota-based Thern’s parts are covered under a two-year limited warranty, which is the most advanced in the industry.
