Thern Davit Cranes Prove Economical Solution for Multiple Lifting Applications

ImageIn these tough economic times, cost-effectiveness has become increasingly important to managers in all industries. The wastewater treatment industry is no exception. Products that can be used for multiple applications or are portable are preferable and more cost-effective compared to single-application products.

When Matthew Marasco, water quality supervisor for the Washington-East Washington Joint Authority (WEWJA) in Washington, Penn., needed a crane to lift the gates on their newly constructed aeration tanks he chose a Thern 5122 Series Portable Davit Crane for its economical flexibility.

The WEWJA processes 8.5 million gallons of wastewater every day using fixed film biotowers, anaerobic processes and aeration tanks. A newly constructed expansion to the plant created 4 aeration tanks, each needing a crane to lift the gates. Using independent bases at each of the 4 lift stations, Marasco and his team are able to move one Thern Davit Crane between each of the gates as needed quickly and easily.

Although Marasco says WEWJA plans to purchase additional cranes in the future, the portability of the 5122 series allowed them to save money early on in the expansion of the plant with the flexibility to add more cranes to their system gradually.

ImageIn addition to their portability, Thern’s 5122 Series Portable Davit Cranes also feature a quick disconnect anchor for quickly attaching or removing the wire rope from the winch drum allowing operators to leave the hook attached to the load, disconnect the wire rope from the crane, and move the crane to the next lift station. Perfect for the next job Marasco has planned for a Thern Davit Crane. He plans to purchase an additional crane for WEWJA to mount on a rail system and use it to lift a submerged pump.

The Thern 5122 Series Portable Davit Cranes rotate 360 degrees on a pin and sleeve bearing in the base for smooth rotation. Thern uses corrosion resistant finishes with an electrostatic powder coating on their cranes, however, a galvanized finish and stainless steel models are also available.
